
The first Miss South Africa, Norma Vorster, was crowned more than 50 years ago in 1956. Before this date, there were many beauty pageants held across the country, but none were recognised as a Miss South Africa pageant. Following the launch of Miss World and Miss Universe, the official Miss South Africa pageant was born.
The history of the Miss SA pageant has not been without controversy, but as South Africa transformed into a democratic country, so did the pageant.
