South Africa's National and International Beauty Title Holders give back on Madiba Day

South Africa celebrated the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth this week. His birthday on July 18 is marked annually around the world and the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) called this year for people to "take action and inspire change" in Mandela's name.

People around the country heeded the call to do good in honour of Madiba including reigning Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, Miss South Africa title holders Tamaryn Green and Thulisa Keyi as well as former Miss World, Dr Rolene Strauss.

Nel-Peters was in the country to take part in the official Absa NMF Centenary Celebrations. On Wednesday, July 18, she visited the David Makhubo Secondary School in Midrand to do her bit and share her story. In honour of Mandela Day, the school's offices and kitchen were refurbished and other donations made.

The school was established in 2014 as a response to the challenges posed by the socio-economic conditions in the community of Kaalfontein, Extension 23, and surrounding townships. Currently the school has 1151 learners, from grade 8 to grade 12, and continues to face many challenges when it comes to infrastructure and resources needed to provide the best possible learning environment for their students.

Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green – along with Cell C (licence holders of Miss South Africa along with Sun International) – participated in Adopt-a-School's Back to School for a Day activities at Tshilidzi Primary School in Chiawelo, Soweto. Two teams of volunteers took part – one painted a classroom while the other assisted with a touch rugby clinic.

Miss South Africa World Thulisa Keyi (who hails from Mdantsane outside East London in the Eastern Cape) and former Miss World Dr Rolene Strauss joined reigning Miss World Manushi Chhillar in Mvezo (Madiba's birthplace) in the Eastern Cape where they did a handover of the first 100 percent compostable sanitary pad manufacturing unit in South Africa.
