What We Are Looking For in a Miss SA Winner

Although times have changed since the inception of the Miss South Africa pageant, the same qualities are still required for the incumbent Miss South Africa to be able to shine as a role model and ambassador.

The perception of this role and reality can sometimes be vastly different. The idea that a "Beauty Queen" is just for show and only judged on her exterior beauty is certainly not relevant in the search for our ambassador. We always refer to the "full package" which includes among other attributes, the inner strength and maturity to take on the role and be able to interact with people on all levels and social standing.

From the moment of completing the entry form, the "job interview" commences and this will eventually culminate in the winner taking on a position which will see them "working" for their sponsors, Sun International, designers, charities, media and most importantly, for the South African public.

One of the most challenging aspects of being Miss South Africa is the hectic schedule and lifestyle which begins from the moment of crowning. We encourage a healthy way of life - with the correct eating and exercise plan - to be able to sustain energy levels and general wellbeing throughout her reign.

The most rewarding aspect of taking on this role is the joy of giving time and energy to those less fortunate and the heart warming and heart wrenching moments that are experienced. The value of the impact that you can make on the lives of so many people cannot be measured in monetary terms. Having empathy and compassion are key to making a difference.

A key focus of the pageant is to empower women from the moment they are chosen as semi-finalists to the possibility of eventually being crowned the winner.

Miss SA Pageant Scouts

Miss SA pageant scouts have been appointed in various regions around the country to search for potential Miss SA applicants. The role of the scouts is to recruit and encourage suitable candidates and ensure that they meet the stipulated entry criteria. Hints, advice, interview skills and their experience and insight into the pageant are all ways in which the scouts can assist candidates to be the best they can be.

Any Miss SA pageant hopefuls discovered by the scouts are subject to the same judging process as all other entrants.

Automatic Miss SA Beauty Pageant Entries

Pageant winners and princesses from national and regional pageants that meet the Miss SA criteria are automatically fast tracked to the quarter-finals (interview round). For more details on automatic Miss SA beauty pageant entries, please contact Wendy Futcher at wendy.futcher@za.suninternational.com.

Paper-judging

Through a process of paper-judging, potential Miss SA pageant contestants are shortlisted and invited for an interview. All applications are checked to ensure that pre-qualifying criteria have been met.

Miss SA Pageant Quarter-finalists

Once paper-judging has been completed, the contestants are short-listed and invited for an interview. These interviews, the quarter-final round, will take place at Sun International hotels around South Africa.

Miss SA Pageant Semi-finalists

Semi-finalists are then chosen in each region and will gather at Sun City for further judging to determine the 12 finalists for the Miss SA Pageant. All selections are audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers with the judges' decision being final.

Miss South Africa Pageant Workshops

Once the selection of the semi-finalists has taken place, the chosen candidates attend comprehensive workshops, many of which are practical hands-on sessions, at Sun City in October. During this time, the Miss South Africa pageant workshops cover topics such as media relations, personal branding, etiquette, make-up, hair, skincare, styling, health and nutrition and elocution lessons. This knowledge will equip these ambassadors with the skills required to take on the role of Miss South Africa.

An important part of the workshops is for all the candidates to have a full understanding of the role of Miss South Africa. The current Miss SA, Nicole Flint, and former Miss SA title holders impart their knowledge and experiences as Miss SA and life thereafter.

Miss SA Finalist Profiles

Once the workshops are completed and the 12 Miss SA pageant finalists chosen, their profiles are filmed and publicity photographs are taken for television and media purposes.
